Facebook launches free calling for iOS users in UK.

facebook messenger free call

After launching free calling in North America earlier this year, Facebook is expanding its VOIP service to the UK. To make or receive calls, you need to have the Facebook Messenger application for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch installed. You can call any of your contacts by selecting the “i” button in conversation view and pressing “Free Call.” Messenger supports backgrounding and push notifications, and you’ll also be able to leave voice messages when your friends are offline.

With the addition of UK VOIP support, Facebook has essentially opened the door to free calls between its huge number of users in the UK, US, and Canada. We tested the service on its US launch and found the call quality to be “on par with competitors” such as Viber and Skype. We’ve reached out to Facebook to ask if it has any plans to launch the service in the rest of Europe, and will update you once we hear back.

Facebook app updated with free calling to U.S., Canada.

Facebook app updated with free calling to U.S., Canada, more

Facebook for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad has been updated to version 5.5. New features include an improved button design, intended to make commenting, liking, and sharing easier on News Feed posts, and the inclusion of free VoIP calls for users in the U.S. and Canada, something previously introduced in the separate Facebook Messenger app.

VoIP requires Wi-Fi or cellular data. And, of course, reports of bugginess are already coming in… If you’ve tried out the latest Facebook update, let me know how it’s working for you. If you haven’t tried Facebook for iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad yet, grab it from the App Store via the link below.

Facebook launches VoIP calls, voice memos in Messenger app.

If you use Facebook’s dedicated Messenger application on your iOS device, you should know that the social networking giant has released an update with a few very interesting new features. Version 2.1 now lets users record and send voice memos in any conversation. The only restriction is that the memos have to be less than a minute but, honestly, who’s going to listen to a voice memo for more than a minute anyway? All you have to do is click the red record button in the application, press send, and your voice memo will appear as a playable file in the thread!

The other big new feature in the app is free VoIP calls. Currently it looks like this capability is limited to Canadian users, but if you happen to reside in Canada, you can now make free voice calls to your friends via the Facebook Messenger application. Interestingly, as Engadget points out, although Facebook and Skype are official partners, this latest VoIP venture is based off open source tech, not Skype. It is kind of a bummer that it’s Canada-only as of now, but I’m sure that won’t last for long.

If this sounds intriguing, you can head over to the App Store now to download the official Facebook Messenger application for free or update your current version. Once you’ve done so, come back here and let us know what you think of the new features!
